I think that's exactly it. I started watching the show when it aired a few years ago, and since I started it from the very beginning I have no problem with the earlier seasons (I'm a huge fan of Trapper and a Trapper/Margaret shipper), though in hindsight I can understand why they might feel jarring for some people. It was only later that I saw the movie, and it just felt so
, not because it was bad, but because it felt like a different universe. The thing that struck me the most is that Trapper and Hawkeye seemed to have switched names in the movie, as movie!Trapper seemed to have more plotlines and traits from early TV show!Hawkeye and vice-versa. I can't speak about the book, as I haven't read it yet, but from what I've heard about it I have the feeling things will feel even more bizarre for me when I do read it.
